Perhaps the most enthusiastic development and significance of Language of Flowers came during the Victorian era. Messages were popularly conveyed through the Language of Flowers, secret lovers sent seemingly innocent flower bouquets to each other to convey their feelings. Particularly, during the Elizabethan period, struct social norms of 'moral conduct' bred hypocrisy and ways to circumvent the austere social codes. During the period romantic liaisons were conducted with help of the language of flowers, which evolved into a language to convey romantic gestures and true love.
Victorian publications of various flower dictionaries proliferated the 'secret' flower language. Poetical symbolism was assigned to the shapes and colors of flowers. Just about any type of message could be conveyed with a beautiful flower and a single flower conveyed a whole sentence. The language of flowers was as important to the Victorians as being "well dressed." For example, the recognizable scent of a particular flower, plant or perhaps a scented handkerchief sent its own unique message.
A combination and arrangement of flowers could be altered to convey specific messages. A red rose combined with white rose buds would for instance mean a different thing than a single red blooming rose. The scents, sizes of flowers and even the position of the giver when the bouquets were delivered directly would affect the message. Using the right hand to accepting the flowers generally conveyed a "Yes" while the left hand indicated "No". An inverted flower conveyed the opposite meaning. An inverted red rose was a very strong message of rejection.
The flower language had to right not only in bouquets sent to lovers; but even centerpieces to wedding bouquets had a language. Understanding this language of flowers was an integral element of Victorian life.
Flowers adorned - the hair, clothing, jewelry, gowns, men's lapels, home decor and china, and stationery. A young man could either please or displease a lady with his gift of flowers. Flowers had a silent language of their very own, and could "say" what was not dared to be spoken. Even the manner in which flowers were sent had a special meaning.
Victorian Ladies were very involved in making bouquets. Tussie-Mussies - small bouquets of flowers wrapped in a lace doily and tied with satin - were very popular gifts. The intrigue of a secret messages sent this way, became a popular pastime.
In modern times, the fine nuances of the language of flowers are all but forgotten. However, a red rose still conveys passionate, romantic love and white roses still suggest virtue and chastity, while yellow roses still stand for friendship or devotion. Even if these are not the exact translations of the Victorian sentiments, flowers still speak in their language. Flowers also have religious and symbolic meanings. There are references given to flowers in Biblical literature, and during the Middle Ages, floral herbs were even believed by some to have magical powers. Therefore, Flowers were given a place of honor in the royal gardens.
