Replanting Narcissus

Thu, 17 Jan 2008 06:00:00 GMT

By Carol: Does the narcisscus (paper white) need to be changed to a bigger pot when it gets bigger

Answer By Webmaster: Eventually, after 3-5 years, Narcissus bulbs will become overcrowded, with reduced flowering and smaller flowers. It is now time to dig up and split your Narcissus bulb clumps.

This is best done in spring when the foliage is brown and still present, so that you can still see where the bulbs are. Remove all the loose soil, and allow the bulbs to dry in shallow trays, or mesh sacks where there is good air circulation for drying off.

When dry, the clumps can be split up. Remove the old, dried skins and roots.

Answer By Webmaster: Yes, Carnations are absorbent flowers.

The levels of ethylene which can affect living plants are very low, for example ethylene concentrations above 100 nl per liter of air will seriously reduce the vase life of carnations, and levels of that order are commonly present in city air from vehicle exhausts, cigarette smoke, refinery gases, fluorescent lights and from ripening of fruits such as apples.

Tall Paperwhite Flowers

Sat, 12 Jan 2008 06:00:00 GMT

By Deb: Paperwhites are too tall and they are falling over. Can we trim?

Answer By Webmaster: Trimming the paperwhites is not necessary. Its a common problem for the paperwhites. That is they get too tall and top-heavy as they bloom, which causes the stems to flop or bend. If so, give the support for the stems to be a decorative element. A bush of twiggy branches stuck into the pot, a small homemade fence around the container, or a small wire obelisk will look good and be a support for aging stems.

Some Info on Paperwhites

Sat, 12 Jan 2008 06:00:00 GMT

By Michelle:Storing the paper white flowers bulbs and some info

Answer By Webmaster: If you need to store your bulbs before planting, make sure they get the proper ventilation, by storing them in a mesh bag, a paper bag with holes, or an open tray. Be careful not to drop or damage the bulbs, and make sure you do not subject them to extremes in temperature. When storing bulbs in the refrigerator, do not place them in the same storage bin as fruit. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas that can cause flowers to form only partially or not at all.

Fri, 04 Jan 2008 06:00:00 GMT

By Sylvia: Preventing the nauseous nature of the lilies, but need Lilies

Answer By Webmaster: Many lilies are wonderfully fragrant and their scent is one of the best reasons for growing them, an extra dimension that brings so much pleasure. But not all lilies are fragrant. Most L. longiflorum or trumpet lilies are fragrant and, of course, the beloved L. regale that fills the florist shops each Christmas.

It may be better to grow Asiatic hybrids which are colourful and dramatic but have no scent.
