Zinnia plant

Fri, 13 Feb 2009 06:00:00 GMT

By Joe Cascio: Are the tufts of green on the zinnia plant the seeds?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Dear Joe,

Below each Zinnia spent flower, there exists a seed, below each individual petal. It is a pointed tip, similar in shape to an arrowhead or the tip of a javelin - this is the seed. When it becomes brown or gray then it means its ripe.

Tufts of short stems are seen in Desert Zinnia. Desert zinnia grows tufts of short soft stems barely six inches high that root-sprout and gradually become a continuous pale-green grasslike carpet. Once desert zinnia begins to bloom, the one-inch-diameter bright-yellow flowers obscure the foliage completely. Old flowers dry and break off their stems as new flowers starts forming.

Thrips on Gladiolus

Fri, 13 Feb 2009 06:00:00 GMT

By Silvia: How to treat thrips on gladiolus?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Dear Silvia,

There are several methods when you think of treating corms of gladiolus.

1. Like keeping the corms cool enough, at temperatures between 35° and 40° F, where thrips will not survive.

2. Try dusting corms with carbaryl, shaking them in a bag with a small amount of the dust (just 2 teaspoons per hundred corms).

3. Soak corms for six hours in a mixture of 4 teaspoons Lysol ® or other disinfectant and one gallon of water, and to dry corms before storing them.

4. Dip corms in very hot--not boiling--water (160°F) for two minutes. Allow corms to dry before storing them.

5. Store the corms with naphthalene flakes or balls (mothballs). Use one ounce for one hundred corms and enclose them in a paper or cloth bag.

Thu, 12 Feb 2009 06:00:00 GMT

Cannas

Wed, 11 Feb 2009 06:00:00 GMT

By Birenda O: I've grown cannas all my life and my dad grew them my entire childhood.I can ever remember having this problem, all the leaves turn yellow, then brown and die, cannot figure it out. I cannot find any pests on them, the japanese beetles were minimal this year, slugs were minimal.Since the newer shoots are experiencing the same issue, I'm concerned for next year if something is in the ground?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Dear Madam/Sir,

Probably it is the work of frost. Frost makes the Cannas into black color.

Now, you can cut the stalks to one inch above the ground, dig the clump and remove some of the soil around the edge and roots.

Dry the clumps in the sun for a couple of days upside-down.

Then store each clump in a box surrounded by Perlite or peat moss.

You can store in a cool basement with temperature around 40-50F, and moistening the perlite once per month so that rhizomes do not dry up.

In March, take the clumps from each box, remove remaining soil, and break the twisted clumps into smaller clumps each containing at least three eyes. Each clump will yield four or more new rhizomes.

Try this and see.

Gladiolus flowers

Thu, 05 Feb 2009 06:00:00 GMT

By Sandy: Does that mean I have to pull them out or they will die in the winter or if I leave them, will they rebloom in the spring?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Dear Sandy,

After the gladiolus flowers are finished , only flower stalk should be cut down. Then the foliage be left to continue growing into autumn as it feeds the bulb.

Then in late autumn, lift the corms and dry them off. Once dry, remove all soil and dead foliage. Store in a single layer in a frost-free shed or garage. Good ventilation minimises risk of mildew.

Each corm will produce a number of smaller offsets. These take two years to reach flowering size and can be stored in the same way before being planted.

Gardenia tree for mothers day

Thu, 05 Feb 2009 06:00:00 GMT

By Rosalind Brunsman: I received a beautiful gardenia tree for mothers day with blossoms on, I have bought the right fertilizer, spray, and the tree is green and healthy looking, but it gets alot of buds, and they either fall off or don't open, what am I doing wrong?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Dear Rosalind,

In Gardenias, if there is a water stress in a heavily budded plant, many buds will fall before opening(water regularly but make sure the soil is not wet).

We should realise that when the plant is in bud, there should not be large variations in soil moisture.

One can use mulch and avoid cultivation around the base of the plant to help maintain adequate moisture.

Orange Tree Plant

Wed, 04 Feb 2009 06:00:00 GMT

By mike: I have an orange tree plant in a pot, I've had it for about 4 yrs, But now one of the orange plant is getting black, Is it a type of fungus? What can I do?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Dear Mike,

The leaves and stems of Orange tree are becoming black, may be due to the presence of some piercing, sucking insects.

It is usually the work of aphids, whiteflies and scale insects feeding on the undersides of leaves and along stems producing excreta that falls on the leaves.

Upon that excreta a "sooty mold" fungus lives on the nutrient-rich waste material.

To prevent the situation, you can use some fungicides and spray.

6 feet tall jasmine plant

Mon, 02 Feb 2009 06:00:00 GMT

By Harish Rana: I have about 6 feet tall Jasmine plant in a 12" pot kept outside in my garden yard, Now since it is 6 feet tall, I cannot keep it in the house in winter. Can I leave the pot out side during winter? will it die if I do so?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Dear Rana

If you are in a tropical area, then its ok, as the plant itself is a tropical plant, would be happily growing outdoors.

If you in a frost full area, then its slightly difficult for the plant to survive, as Jasmines cannot stand the frost.

If there is full frost, it will not survive outside. In winter the jasmine plant can be kept indoors near a windowsill that gets a western exposure and light and sun all day.

Mon, 02 Feb 2009 06:00:00 GMT

By Kati Koenig: I'm researching some problems I've been having with our clematis...it is an evergreen variety, clematis armandii. We bought with the intent of growing it up over a pergola on our back porch to create some shade and garden oasis feel. Please help ?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Dear Sir/madam,

I think the plant is struggling to survive in the climate.

Even if the fungus or mildew is troubling the plant then its best to get a combo fungicide/mildewicide from your local nursery for spraying.

One has to Cut back the plant very hard after bloom to avoid a tangled mess. The plant needs part shade in hot summer climates.

See the difference after spraying or else discard the plant and go for Jasmines as they very well got adjusted to that particular climate.

So, piching the growing point is essential while pinching carnations) Plucking means during plucking the carnations, leave three to four nodes at the base and remove the stem. In spray carnations, the inflorescence should be removed when two to three upper flowers are open.

This prevents undesirable seed and pod development which could reduce flower production in following years. Additionally, 2 to 3 pounds of a 5-10-5 or 6-10-4 fertilizer may be applied to 100 square feet of bed area immediately after blooming.

The length of time it takes the foliage to mature depends on plant type, weather, and cultural maintenance. It may not be until late June for some bulb types. Premature removal of plant foliage stops bulb growth and may drastically cut flower numbers next spring.

Fuscia (SIC)

By Robert: ?

Answer By The Flower Expert: I think you are giving it too much nitrogen in the fertilizer. (Thus lots of bulbs/blossoms but no flower)

If that is the case, it makes more leaves and less flowers.

Fertilizer is for flowering plants. For instance, it should read 3-5-7 instead of 5-3-3.

(Nitrogen is always the first one listed, then Phosphate, then Potash).

By Patti: ?

Answer By The Flower Expert: : If the Daisies plants become leggy, cut them. They need staking, especially on fertile soils. Keep soil moist in summer.

Cut back after flowering to encourage repeat blooming.

Deadhead frequently for prolonged flowering.

Cut back plants in fall if they become leggy.

Divide every 2 to 3 years in spring to maintain healthy plants.

By this method you may have joyful daisies.

By Susan : ?

Answer By The Flower Expert: The yellowing of Morning Glories can simply be from the heat of the sun, or watering from above instead from the bottom or a calcium defiency. You can Sprinkle epsom salt at the base of the plants and then slightly water it in. Use about a cup for every 4 feet of ground that the morning glories are planted in.

Micronutrients

Tue, 05 Aug 2008 05:00:00 GMT

By Bill: What are Micronutrients?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Micronutrients are plant nutrients that are essential for plant growth but are only needed in small amounts to be effective. There are six micronutrients:

Boron (B), Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Molybdenum (Mo), Zinc (Zn) .

These micronutrients are essential but in a lesser quantity. They should be given in high quantities. If they are given in excess, then the plants are susceptible to salts injury.

Micronutrient toxicities can occur if substrate pH is too low.

Excess micronutrients on the plants can cause dieback of the growing tips, marginal necrosis of leaves.

New Guinea Impatiens need only moderate levels of micronutrients.
