Poinsettia Care after Christmas

Mon, 05 Feb 2007 06:00:00 GMT

By Cristina:How can I preservePoinsettia for the next Christmas?

Answer By Garry:Poinsettia needs to be watered regularly. The soil should be moist but not wet. Water can be given when soil becomes dry only. Change poinsettia to larger pot than previous one. Use fast-draining potting soil, which is rich in organic matter. Keep the plant in sunny window. When night temperature is above 60 degrees F move the plant outside. Cut the poinsettia during late March or early April. In the month of May normally you will see vigorous growth. Pruning should be done during summer and after late summer stop pruning. Feeding every two weeks with a complete 20-20-20 soluble fertilizer is must. Before the temperature falls below 55 degree F check for pests. Poinsettia grows well when nights are long and day is short. After September poinsettia needs atleast 12 hours of dark period in a day. Keep poinsettia completely in dark after 5pm in this period. Slowly reduce fertilizers ones they start flowering. In this way you can preserve your beautiful Poinsettia for next christmas.
