Origin Of Thanksgiving

Pilgrims, members of the English Separatist Church, sailed to the US aboard the Mayflower (a Puritan sect). The Pilgrims and some colonists set ground at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was devastating. But their subsequent harvest in 1621 was bountiful. The colonists celebrated with a feast with including 91 Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year.

Contrary to popular belief, the pilgrims and their Native American guests did not sit down to a meal featuring turkey, corn, cranberries, and pumpkin pie (in fact, they did not even have forks!).

The feast was not repeated the following year. But in 1623, during a severe drought, the pilgrims gathered in a prayer service, praying for rain. When a long, steady rain followed the very next day, another day of Thanksgiving was proclaimed, again with the Indians.

In 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving. In 1941, Thanksgiving was finally sanctioned by the Congress as a legal holiday, as the fourth Thursday in November.

While Canadians have observed this harvest feast since the mid-1500s, Thanksgiving Day was not observed on any particular date until 1957. The Canadian government proclaimed the second Monday of October a federal holiday. The Canadian Thanksgiving holiday evolved separately from the U.S. one, but its main tradition also marks families and communities coming together to feast on turkey, stuffing, and pie.
