Flower shop owner to file as Mayor

Gerhard Watzig, a downtown flower shop owner, has filed to run for mayor of Portland next year.

Portland needs new ways of thinking, Watzig said Monday. He's focused on issues from improving city infrastructure to cutting the cost of doing business, he said.

Born in Germany, Watzig moved with his parents to a farm in Washington in the 1950s and to Portland in 1956. He graduated from David Douglas High School and got a sociology degree from Oregon State, then held a series of jobs, including deputy sheriff in Multnomah County and sales and marketing positions, he said...

Residents who participate in the Rockland Master Gardener program said the experience had allowed them to meet new friends, learn more about gardening and serve the community.

The program is offered by the Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Rockland and includes training on everything from plant botany to addressing wildlife nuisances.

It is apparently so thorough that in just 10 weeks, you can go from all-thumbs to green thumbs...

While most other flower growers in Da Lat are busy multiplying foreign flower breeds, Tran Pham Anh Tuan is bent on creating new ones.

So when he first embarked on his journey to create new plant breeds for Da Lat seven years ago, friends and colleagues were skeptical andtried to persuade him to follow the conventional road multiplying foreign plants using asexual reproduction methods.

The most interesting feature, however, is that the new petunia breed can yield flowers for nine months yearly, which is three months longer than the imported breed and the flowers can last for an entire week. At present, Tuan is preparing thousands of petunia pots to showcase at the Da Lat Flower Festival 2007 to be held next month...


National FFA floriculture contest

The Kendrick FFA Chapter is having a scholarship breakfast and poinsettia sale at the Senior Citizen Center in Kendrick December 8 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The menu will consist of pancakes, French toast, sausage, eggs, applesauce, juice, coffee and hot chocolate. The cost for the breakfast is $5 for an adult and $3 for kids 12 and under.


Ellerslie Flower Show

EASTERN entrants were among the big winners at the Ellerslie Flower Show last week.

The Earth Sharing Garden created by Howick based landscape designer Lynn Cairney of Fusion Landscape Design and Julie Moore from Plantet Earth was named People?s Choice.

The Earth Sharing Garden also won a gold medal and a supreme award for national lighting.

Manukau City Council?s performance garden won a gold award at the show.

The council says the garden gave show visitors a taste of the Aotearoa that colonial settlers first experienced and featured exciting performers from a range of Manukau cultures. It won the gold award in the retail garden category.

Judges described the garden as ?really innovative. It captures the essence of this part of the world.
