Raising money through plant sale

Students, professors and a bevy of volunteers from Cabrillo College's horticulture department are busy digging, planting and potting to prepare for the annual Mother's Day Weekend plant sale. .

Almost in its third decade, the sale attracts thousands of gardeners from all over the county, many of whom bring their wagons to load up their spring supply of herbs, vegetables, flowers and succulents, among others. Some say it's the biggest plant sale on the Central Coast.

The sale raises money to support Cabrillo's horticulture department, including curriculum development, care for plants and internships for students. Organizers estimate last year's take at $100,000...

Due to tremendous public interest, Darts Hill Garden Park will be open this weekend and, for the first time, visitors will be able to purchase plants propagated directly from the garden.

Two of the florists behind the drive have personal experience with the disease.

A Flora of La Florida exhibit will run concurrently, featuring the botanical illustrations of Archer resident Susan Trammell.

And Ottawa believes three million are even better.

That's the number of tulips expected to burst forth during the city-by-the-Rideau's annual Canadian Tulip Festival, which runs from tomorrow until May 21.

Some 600,000 bulbs were planted last October to augment the millions already in the ground, says landscape architect Dorota Grudniewicz, who designed the 90 flower beds (the equivalent of 15,000-square-metres of garden), scattered throughout the national capital region.

There are 30 different garden sites including Major's Hill Park with 75,000 tulips and Commissioners Park, at Dow Lake, with 300,000 more...
