Easter this year

Mon, 26 Mar 2007 06:00:00 GMT

Easter is early this year (April 8), but the timing is perfect to capture the best of Northwest spring garden flowers for arrangements.

Instead of an Easter basket full of eggs or candy, consider a basket full of orange and yellow tulip "eggs." If cut so the heads just peek above the edge of the basket, the tulips look like eggs for a fun brunch centerpiece.

New York Orchid Show

Sat, 24 Mar 2007 06:00:00 GMT

Two years ago a shipment of more than 1,100 wild orchids was intercepted in Miami. Packed in just a dozen unmarked cardboard boxes, they had been gathered and sent illegally from the Philippines and were in bad shape, dehydrated with broken stems, wilted flowers and crushed leaves. The waning treasures some were worth as much as $500 were sent to the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx for rehabilitation, one of the few places in the country capable of that kind of care.

Now these wayward blooms have been nursed back to health and are on display as part of the fifth annual Orchid Show there. The country's largest curator-organized exhibition, it features more than 8,000 individual flowers, from the platystele, a miniature dotted with tiny blossoms smaller than the head of a pin, to the cattelya, which has a 10-inch flower...

While the Botanical Garden as a whole had nearly 90,000 flower bulbs planted last year, about 9,000 of those are in the Ottoman garden, which includes historic hybrid tulips with varieties dating from the 1500s.

One of the nation's largest displays of rare tulips is poised to be in full bloom in a few weeks at the new Ottoman garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

New England Spring Flower Show

Thu, 22 Mar 2007 06:00:00 GMT

To make a Japanese-influenced garden these days, you have to do more than buy a stone lantern and plant some dwarf evergreens.

American gardeners today are much more sophisticated.

The “Asian fusion” gardening of 2007 is more about the principles of the Japanese or Chinese garden - simplicity and serenity - and less about making an exact replica of an Asian garden or using only plants indigenous to the East.

At the New England Spring Flower Show, which runs through Sunday at the Bayside Expo Center in Boston, several of the exhibits focus on how home gardeners can incorporate bamboo, threadleaf Japanese maples and stone lanterns alongside native New England plants and materials...

The African theme was inspired by Macy's “Path to Peace” project, which features handmade peace baskets made by 2,000 genocide survivors in Rwanda. The baskets are available at the Gadina Africana boutique and at www.macys.

Springtime Flowers

Fri, 16 Mar 2007 06:00:00 GMT

prweb

Temperatures are rising, birds are singing and the brilliantly colored flower blooms have arrived. Springtime is here, and everyone is tempted to play hooky just to get a chance to sit in the sun and watch nature awaken after its winter slumber.

When choosing a springtime bouquet, Vann Jernigan Florist recommends flowers that are in season and bred for longevity. “We provide customers with only the best quality flowers and that means, in season and natural varieties,” said Diana Cochran, the owner of Vann Jernigan Florist. “Flowers that have been crossbred and grown out of season are not as beautiful, fragrant and just don't last, plus they cost much more than the natural, hardy variety.”..
