The perennially popular community extravaganza kicks off Wednesday in Holland, and promises plenty of concerts, a carnival, beer, crafts, kids' activities, parades and outdoor fun.

The festival -- which has been held in Holland for more than 75 years -- also will include traditional fare, including Klompen (wooden shoe) dancers, Dutch foods and a quilt show, a town crier competition and the annual “cleaning of the streets.”.

Every spring since 1965 Goldsmith Seeds holds its annual Spring Trials. During these trials, hundreds of new plants are introduced to the nursery/greenhouse industry and thousands are on display. In the early days, a few employees and friends would bring home a carload of flowering plants after the event was finished. However, as the trials grew, so did the number of plants. About 20 years ago, Glenn and Joel Goldsmith and the Gilroy Rotary formed the annual sale to support service providers, schools and nonprofits.

The 2007 Gardening Forum will run from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Warren County Career Center. Check-in or at-the-door registration begin at 8 a.m.

Gardening sessions will be running throughout the day and participants may take as many sessions as they want. Presenters are local experts in the field of landscape/horticulture.

Subjects of the sessions include roses, landscape makeover, building soils for better planting, shade loving plants, colorful and diverse annuals, trees and tree care, sedum and sempervivum. A special workshop on fresh flower arranging is $5 additional...


Volunteers invited to produce garden

Volunteers can participate in "Garden Day" at 9 a.m. April 7 by helping to plant the next crop at New Beginnings Center at 1399 N. Hamilton Parkway.

Participants will set out vegetables and herbs in the organic garden, which supplies produce for meals at the 80-bed center and other Homeward Bound facilities. The garden produces more than 400 pounds of produce per year, with any surplus donated to the Marin Community Food Bank...
