Virginia State Flower

Image 0f Virginia State Flower: American Dogwood American Dogwood (Cornus florida or Benthamidia florida) was adopted as the state flower of Virginia in 1918. Dogwoods are commonly seen in northern temperate regions of the U.S. The American Dogwood flowers are small and consists of four showy petal-like bracts, usually snow white or pink.

American Dogwood flowers are highly modified leaves that perform reproductive functions for the plant. The flowers occur in small, greenish - yellow, inconspicuous clusters at the center and above four large, showy white to pinkish bracts. The Dogwood flower bracts are 1-2 inches long and obovate in shape, usually with a cleft at the tip. There are clusters of bright red football shaped fruits, about a half inch long, following the Dogwood flowers and often remain until winter. Flowering occurs in late April and early May.

Facts About American Dogwood

American Dogwoods are the hard decidous flowering plants growing to 15 to 20 feet tall.
American Dogwoods have oppositely arranged, oval shaped leaves which are 3-6 inches long and 2-3 inches wide.
American Dogwoods plant's bark is deeply ridged, rough, broken, and resembles crocodile skin.
American Dogwood's leaves grow up to 5 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide, green with short stalks, with pale green at the underside of the leaf.
There are deeply notched bracts near the cluster of flowers, (this formation is often mistaken for the flower).
There are small berries or fruits(drupes) are scarlet red, oval shaped growing in clusters, with 1-2 seeds inside it.
The flowering period in Cornus florida is May.
In the fall, the tree becomes yellow through red, but usuallly dark red.
